The "Matto" Play Hard Chart

The Matto award is a defensive statistical award that we give out for the player that has the most defensive points. The idea for the Matto was given to me by the Illini Basketball program. The U of I men’s basketball team gives this award in honor of former Illini player, Matt Heldman. He was killed in a car accident in 1999. The Illini give the award out at the end of the year to the player with the most MATTO points. These stats keep track of how hard and aggressive they are playing because of the way that Matt played. Both us and the Illini also track this statistic in practice. Players are awarded points for the following defensive statistics.

Deflection = +1
Blocked Shot = +1
Steal = +1
Dive on the floor = +1
Loose ball recovery = +1
10 Sec. Violation on the ball = +1
Charge Taken = +2
5 Sec. Violation on the ball = +2
